What is the purpose of Mysterious Portal?

I think I'm not understanding the Mysterious Portal in the mine. I go through it, and I'm given 5 energy to chop rocks or recharge items. After doing this, I have to leave and cannot exhaust my own energy in this room. There is a lot of things (like mushrooms) that I would like to get to, to chop and collect. The rocks regrow instantly after leaving/reentering as if I had never been there.

So, how do I get the rocks to stay chopped so I can go further into the room? What is the purpose of this room?

It's just an extra neighbor and it's used for some basic quests. That's pretty much it.

This area belongs to Luka, much in the same way Huginn's Fair belongs to Huginn. Any alterations to the area would have to be done by Luka. I'm not sure what Luka's plans are.
