Default I never seem to have enough money....

to be able to buy many of the quests that show up at nearly the same time. I just started playing a week or so ago. I have been buliding as much as I can get enough money and wood as soon as I can, but there never seems to be enough money and many of the quests have to wait. I have a number of neighbors already. How do you develop a larger economy?

Focus on increasing your fun level, and on buying buildings with higher profit per use.

Also there's a tonne of quests that unlock at levels 9 and 10, you're not really meant to do them all at once, it's meant to give you a bit a flexibility in how you want to play the game. Just keep in mind that most of the quests released each week are limited ones so if you like them you should aim to complete them within a month -- but if one of the themes doesn't appeal to you there is no penalty for not finishing.
There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.
